Information about the prototype

The class 44 locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn were heavy, five-coupled freight train unit steam locomotives of the G 56.20 class with a triple engine. They were used to haul freight trains weighing up to 1,200 tons on medium mountain routes and 600 tons over steep ramps.

In the 1950s, Deutsche Bahn converted 22 locomotives to pulverized coal firing (Wendler system). The most noticeable changes are the addition of an extra air tank and an extra air pump on the left circulating plate and the addition of a coal dust bunker on the tender. Thanks to their precise firing, these engines proved particularly useful on the ramps of the Thuringian Forest. With the introduction of the EDP number, the coal dust locomotives were renamed class 44.9.
